GCSE Physics
Who this course is for and what does it cover?
This is a science course for learners of any ability, whether or not they intend to study science further or not.
The specification is for Physics teaching units, together with a Controlled Assessment Unit.
Those who wish to progress to AS and A-level science courses will first need to complete the full GCSE Physics course
The units covered in GCSE Science are:
Physics (P1,P2,P3) for core Physics
Physics(P4,P5,P6) for additional Physics
Physics (P7) for complete GCSE Physics

In addition to developing an understanding of scientific concepts, the course is designed to develop scientific literacy. It is intended that students understand how scientific knowledge is obtained, how it is reported and the impacts of this knowledge on society
What will I study?
The focus will be on the fundamentals of Physics including motion, eletricity, radiation and physics at home. Each subtopic will be tested in individual examinations a students will have to do all exams and coursework in one sitting. Please click here for the full syllabus.
Why should I study Physics?
Physics is a application of mathematics and the course will allows the students the ability to demonstrate their understanding of the world around them. Physics will use analytical skills and from the first moment student aptitudes will be tested. Students will use their knowledge already learnt to apply to a variety of situations
How is it assessed?
The GCSE Physics route will be assessed as below, the exam timetable for these wll be allocated closer to summer exam period. All units mu be sat in same academic year.
P1, P2, P3 Written paper (1h) 25%
P4, P5, P6 Written paper (1h) 25%
P7 Written paper (1h) 25%
Coursework 25%
What do I need?
The willingness to learn and to build a platform of accurate, analytical and expressive writing and speaking skills that will be invaluable for your future learning. It is always advisable that students engage in reading outside of lessons, whether fiction or non-fiction, so as to develop exposure to the written word and sophisticated forms of expression.
GCSE entry requirements
CRITERIA: ACADEMIC The minimum entry requirement is 5 passes at a school level equivalent to year 9 in the UK. The admissions staff at Blackwater Academy Birmingham will be more than happy to provide advice on the equivalence of international qualifications
ENTRY CRITERIA: STUDENT AGE – 14-15 ON ENTRY Students who are not 16 on the first day of the academic year (taken as September 1st) are classed as of ‘Compulsory School Age’. Such students will receive a higher level of supervision in school and in their living accommodation for the duration of the academic year.
